I do agree with you that soccer will stay below football and basketball


However, if MLS had started out in 1920 (same year as the APFA/NFL), then I do think it is possible soccer could have a different fate in the US. At the lower levels (i.e. college or HS) soccer wouldn't have been viewed for the longest time (and maybe still is) as a "rich kid sport" or "preppy kids sport." Even if soccer wasn't more popular than American football and/or basketball, I do think the gap between the sports could be a lot closer than what it is today.
